Gait & Balance App

A Motion — Sensing Tool For Supervised Use

The Gait & Balance App (G&B App) is a mobile application that uses built-in smartphone sensors to capture movement data during basic standing and walking tasks. It is designed for use in supervised settings by professionals familiar with balance and gait observation protocols. The app does not provide any clinical decision-making guidance or diagnostic interpretation.

Purpose of the G&B App

Movement challenges, such as reduced balance or altered walking patterns, may be observed in various populations. However, clinical assessment tools often rely on basic, low-resolution methods.

The G&B App offers a structured interface for capturing motion data using smartphone sensors during a predefined set of standing and walking activities. It is intended to support observational gait analysis, but not be relied on to detect, diagnose, or monitor any health condition.

The App is suitable for trained professionals wishing to conduct structured movement assessments under controlled conditions. The user assumes full responsibility for any use of the App and for compliance with local research, clinical, or privacy regulations.

The app is intended only for structured movement assessments by professionals. It does not interpret data or suggest any clinical actions.

Important Notice: Not a Medical or Diagnostic Tool

  • The G&B App is not a medical device and must not be used for diagnosis or treatment.
  • It does not provide health advice or make health-related predictions.
  • All data must be interpreted solely by a supervising professional.
  • The app makes no clinical claims, guarantees, or representations.

App Functionality Overview

The G&B App captures inertial motion data during the following six standardised tasks, based on widely used clinical balance testing protocols:

  1. Standing on firm surface, eyes open
  2. Standing on firm surface, eyes closed
  3. Standing on foam surface, eyes open
  4. Standing on foam surface, eyes closed
  5. Walking in a straight line while looking straight ahead
  6. Walking in a straight line with head turns

Some metrics show good reliability for research use (not diagnosis), and others are included for transparency only. Gait and balance metrics such as acceleration patterns, periodicity, and step symmetry may be estimated. These metrics are not validated for clinical use and should be interpreted cautiously, in research or exploratory settings only.

Reliable Metrics

Postural steadiness, postural steadiness AP, postural steadiness ML, walking speed, periodicity, step length, and step time

(ref: Rashid and Olsen)

Less Reliable Metrics

Step length variability, step length asymmetry, step time variability, and step time asymmetry

No interpretation, risk classification, or threshold is provided by the App. It is the user’s responsibility to understand and interpret all data.

These peer-reviewed studies reflect independent academic evaluations. They do not imply regulatory approval or clinical endorsement.

Some research teams have reported their independent use of G&B App data in non-diagnostic studies.
These publications represent academic findings only and do not imply endorsement, certification, or regulatory clearance of the App.
